Poem of the day: Paul

November 2018

I wrote this poem in May 2012 as part of #frapalymo. However, I believe Paul Celan’s poetry is more important than ever now that nationalism and racism are on the rise everywhere. That is why I repost it.

Paul

(DEDICATED TO PAUL CELAN)

First

I met you

on the school bench:

death camp

death fugue

deadly terror

gave it to me

even though

I did not

understand

a word

then!

Again

you are standing

in front of me

bamboo plants

in your hands

full of

HOPE!

November 2018

Mai 2012.

Paul

(Paul Celan gewidmet)

Zuerst

traf ich auf Dich

auf der Schulbank:

Todeslager

Todesfuge

Todesangst

hat mir

Dein

Gedicht gemacht

obwohl

ich damals

kein Wort

verstand!

Nun

stehst Du

wieder vor mir

mit Bambuspflanzen

in der Hand

voller

HOFFNUNG!

And one more: #frapalymo prompt for May 29th 2012 (#amwriting #poetry)

@FrauPaulchen wrote in her blog today:

“Here is the prompt for day 29 at #frapalymo . It is inspired by the book I just have finished by Else Buschheuer : „Verrückt bleiben/stay crazy“ (and that I read it is just due to @harveypuca  as far as I can remember – Thanks!).

That is why the prompt for the poem on May 29th is: „verrückt/crazy“. (annotation by the translator: “verrueckt” does mean “crazy” but it can also be a wordplay with “moving something around” which you can’t do in English unfortunately.)

Sorry, one late one and no poem (probably ;-) ) #frapalymo No 27

@FrauPaulchen wrote in her blog yesterday:

Here is the prompt for day 27 at #frapalymo . It is inspired by a great poet Paul Celan , who is worth reading again and again.

That is why the prompt for the poem at May 27th: “ich habe bambus geschnitten: für dich, mein sohn/I cut bamboo my son, for you!” – on the basis of one of his poems with the same title which is so beautiful but also very sad.  The poem is from the book  Die Niemandsrose. Sprachgitter . (You can find an English translation here Celan-Eratosphere)

#frapalymo no 25 ~ an old one: Friendship

friendship

we saw each other
from far
at first

afterwards
we ran into
each other

possibly
we got
into each others way
more and more

now and then
we misunderstood
each other too

even though
it became
a friendship

This poem is inspired by @FrauPaulchen‘s #frapalymo prompt for May 25, 2012

@FrauPaulchen wrote in her blog yesterday:

Here is the prompt for day 24 at #frapalymo . I have been inspired by Edvard Munch due to a visit to an exhibition.

That is why the prompt for the poem on May 24th is: “die weinende frau/crying girl” –on the basis of pictures, paintings and  statues he has done to that theme. Or as another inspiration, you can see it here. (the link used in the German version is here
