Hello out there in this vast blogosphere. How are you doing today? I hope you have a beautiful Sunday despite everything. And if not that there are those who hug you and support you. I am sending you good vibes all the same!

It’s been a while since I took part in Jim’s Song Lyric Sunday but today’s topic “Maria” captured my imagination. Surely I could find a song that has a “Maria” in it?

I directly remembered Santana’s “Maria, Maria”, “Maria” in “West Side Story” and, of course, the unforgettable “Maria” in “The Sound of Music”. And who thought how many versions of “Ave Maria” are out there? Even Beyonce did one.

But if you have visited my blog on regular basis since December 2019 then you know I am on a mission to challenge your and my listening habits. I am exploring music from countries like Estonia or Ghana and gosh have I discovered some gems.

I wouldn’t call today’s choice a gem. The lyrics seem slightly sexist to me which made me hesitate to use this one. However, I could not find any other song about “Maria” from the more exotic places on this planet with enough information about the musicians. Or I really disliked the song. So, I stuck with this one because it’s a good dance song and I love music in Spanish and French. This one has both and yes, you get a translation after the video.

So come away with me to Colombia, a country that is only known to me via drug gang-related news from tv or Gabriel Garcia Marques’s books. Today’s musicians are GIMS & Maluma. Gandhi Bilel Djuna is known by his stage name Maitre Gims. He is a well-known Rapper from France but was born in Congo. His father and brothers are musicians too. He has worked with Sting, Sia, Little Wayne, and others.

Juan Luis Londoño Arias is professionally known as Maluma. He was born in Medellin and discovered music at a young age. He seems to be a regular in the Billboard Hot Latin Songs and has worked with Shakira and Madonna. In 2019 they recorded “Hola Seniorita (Hello Miss)” and filmed the video in Riad, Marrakesh and at the Bassin de la Menara in Marocco.
