Love Is In Da Blog 2020 Day 16: Find A Song About Love In Spring & Prompt for Day 17

Hello out there good people of the blogosphere. How are you today? I hope life is treating you well and if it sends you a challenge that you are well equiped for it’s lessons.

Today’s prompt is “Find a song about love in spring” and I suggested it. We have a white lilac in the garden and whenever I see it a German classic love song comes to mind: It is “Wenn der weisse Flieder wieder blueht” which means “When the white lilac blooms again”. It came first to prominence in Nazi Germany by the controversial singer and actess Zara Leander. Zara was Swedish and had rather a good music career throughout Europe in the 1920s. This would have opened here the possibility to make it in the United States but she chose to stay in Europe for the sake of her children.

She then chose to work for UFA the German film production business that was used for Nazi propaganda. While she never took a political stance and even published a Yiddish song in the 1930s this decision gave her the reputation of supporting the Nazis for the rest of her life. She never recovered her career fully after the war had ended and needed many years until her home country Sweden credited her for her talent rather than the controversy over her career choices.

“Wenn der weisse Flieder wieder blueht” is also a German film from the early 1950s which is still much loved and is repeated often on TV. It tells the story of a couple who can’t make ends meet. He leaves her without knowing that she is pregnant. Many years later he comes back and meets his daughter but the parents find that they are happier with other partners. I always found this film rather modern because divorce wasn’t an easy option for anyone until the 1970s in Germany.

The YouTube video I chose presents the song in it’s German and Swedish version. It is sung by Liane Augustin in the Zara Leander way. There is also another famous classic love song which is “Nur nicht aus Liebe weinen” which means “Don’t cry because of Love”.

I hope you enjoy this journey to the musical past of Germany πŸ™‚ and as always: If the video does not play here on the blog follow the link underneath to it’s YouTube location.
