One song that came directly in my mind is “Wir wollen niemals auseinandergeh’n” which the English speaking world knows as “A Ring of Gold Forever more”.

The composer Michael Jary and lyricist Bruno Balz wrote the song for the German entry to the 1960 “Grand Prix de la Chanson” now known as the “Eurovision Song Contest”. Balz would have liked Zara Leander to sing it. She has been a success of several of their songs before. But Jary prefered a younger singer and chose the then 17 year old Heidi Bruehl who got to sing it in the end but wasn’t chosen as an entry to the Grand Prix.

Unfortunately, her music label could not find a compromise with the one where the song was to be published so it needed a while to come out. Heidi Bruehl tried to have success in the United States too so her US record label brought out the promotion single “Ring of Gold Forever More”. I could not find out how successful she was. I very much prefer the German version as it has this rather dramatic beginning (please follow the link underneath the video if it does not play here on the blog):

I became aware of the song when I lived in Berlin in 91/92 when I was listening to a great oldie radio station. But in the same year, the German band “Brings” brought out a cover version which was updated and rather successful.
