Today I introduce you to a very inspiring man: Robert Torres aka Sabor Latino. Hip Hop fans might have heard of him already as he has released his first album last year and is featured on MTV and several magazines and blogs.

Robert grew up in the Jamaica neighbourhood of Queens, New York to a Puerto Rican father and a mother from the Dominican Republic. Both worked hard and inspired their son to make a better life. Even though Robert had to deal with prejudices in school he found a way of dealing with his troubles through writing poetry and later hip hop music.

After graduating he worked as a social worker and teacher and realised that the Latino community needs leaders and positive role models to give young people the hope for a better life. His stage name Sabor Latino means “Latino Flavor”. But enough of the introduction. Now the man himself :-):

“How would you describe your self in one paragraph?

A person who loves to inspire others to be the best they can be.

What made you write in the first place?

I write because there is a necessity for leaders in our communities . Being a college graduate and former social worker I understand the value of a positive voice . The youth of today need lots of inspiration in life. It is very important as a representative of positive hip hop and now an author to continue helping many to realize that we all have a gifted talent and need to excercise it. We were all born with special qualities that we can all learn from. My book and album I truly believe will inspire many.Life is about developing positive minds for the future. This is what truly inspires me to do better in life. The most important thing is to always work hard and never give up on your dreams.

What author (or artist) has influenced you and why?

Well, I read a lot of psychology and recreation books.I personally enjoyed the book “The self esteem companion” by Matthew McKay PHD. Great book full of inspiration. Also “The Essentials of research Methods in health, Physical education, Excercise Science and Recreation third editon” was a good read. As far as artists are concerned I listen to KRS One a lot as his music is very positive and educational. In Spanish hip hop I listen to Vico C one of the pioneers of Spanish hip hop. Over all they are great artist. KRS one has also published many books on his perspective on life and hip hop.

Your writing ritual (if you have one)?

My writing ritual- I usually go to the gym and get on the stair master for 45 minutes. After I would take a shower at the gym and on my way home I stop by my local deli and pick up a albacore white tuna sandwich with lettuce and tomato and light mayo with a small coffe with cream and no sugar . After I eat and wind down for about 15minutes I begin writing. One of the things that really helps me is I write a strategic plan before I start a new project . I do my titles and ย ideas first. after i basically follow along what my heart tells me as I’m writing.

Do you suffer from writers block and if, what do you do against it ?

I personally don’t suffer from writers block . When I begin to write I continue in what I call” being in the zone” . I really get deep into thought and just go with the flow.I love writing as I also use it as a form of therapy. Many individuals have asked me what makes me feel better writing music? Or writing books? I answer them that they are both part of my life. I enjoy the recording process as much as the writing process. Writing books to me is a bigger challenge as the project is a bigger magnitude to cover. But in general they both identify who I am as a person.

Your advice for apprentice Writers

Never give up on your dreams.”

Thank you very much, Robert, for letting us know about your writing & music life and all the best for your book and future projects.
